It Just Seems Wrong

It Just Seems Wrong

Kevin Trudeau the author of Natural Cures “They” Don’t Want You to Know About and other books in now in jail for 10 years. Not for so much for defrauding people with his books, but for civil contempt and not paying any of $37 million in fines and hiding his assets.

Evidently one of his infomercials is still running on late night cable stations for the book Free Money “They” Don’t Want You to Know About.

Another company evidently owns the rights to the books and pays Trudeau a percentage of the sales and since the infomercials were bought and paid for before he was sent to prison they are being run.

For hoots and giggles I searched Amazon and all of his books are available. Books, such as his weight loss books, for which he was fined for making claims with no supporting evidence, and eventually landed him in jail. He was prosecuted for lying on the airwaves about his books, not for having lies in his books. The former is not OK, the latter is fine.

The “About the Author” on Amazon is most amusing:

Kevin Trudeau is fast becoming the nation’s foremost consumer advocate and exposer of corporate and government corruption. … He is actively pursuing lawsuits against the individuals, corporations and government agencies that take advantage of the average consumer. He is also dedicated to the formation of various foundations to pursue these goals, and intends to donate much of his fortune for that purpose.

Being a fan of First Amendment I can accept that books that are a total load of fetid dingoes kidneys are sold.

How much money he makes from these books is not obvious to me. That he profits from his books while in jail is annoying but that is part of the price we pay for freedom speech.

As the Doubtful News noted

The money being made from the airing of the informercials are now going to the government and will later on go toward paying off the $37 million Trudeau was fined by the FTC. So, any money from new people goes to pay the old… Um. Weird.

Weird? Yep. It just seems wrong that people will be defrauded today to pay fines due to people being defrauded in the past. The government should not profit from the fraud of others, although what the just solution would be is beyond my pay grade.
