Halloween Special: Talking to the dead with Scripps Health and Dr. Guarneri

Halloween Special: Talking to the dead with Scripps Health and Dr. Guarneri

Is the occult a new trend in so-called "integrative" medicine? I'm beginning to think so. On Thursday, my SBM post featured an expert witness for a board-certified integrative medicine MD who was hauled before the Florida Board of Medicine for malpractice. The expert witness, an integrative physician who testified on the standard of care (if any) for integrative medicine, practices "medical astrology."

And now this.

Mimi Guarneri, MD, an integrative physician with Scripps Health, is the co-founder and Medical Director of a clinic offering "Medical Intuitive" courses, including a lesson in "speaking with the dead."  Becoming a Medical Intuitive, according to the course website, will "supercharge your integrative and holistic practice." No kidding! I imagine the average patient would be stunned to learn his practitioner can speak with the dead.

Of course, the freshman Medical Intuitive (it's capitalized, as if it were an actual specialty) can't expect to chat up the dead, or interact with aliens and angels, like the Master Medical Intuitive can. You must begin at the beginning: with the Level 1 course, which costs about $1500. For that you get a certificate, suitable for framing. California nurses and massage therapists can actually get state-sanctioned continuing education credit for taking the course.

If you are not familiar with Dr. Guarneri and Scripps, some background is in order. Dr. Guarneri is a luminary among integrative physicians. Indeed, according to her own practice's website, she is a "world-renowned" integrative cardiologist. According to Scripps Health,

"she began her career at Scripps Clinic as an interventional cardiologist. However, recognizing the need for a more comprehensive and holistic approach to cardiovascular disease, she founded the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, which combines state-of-the-art cardiac imaging technology and lifestyle change programs to prevent, diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease."

As you'll soon see, Dr. Guarneri hardly stops at "lifestyle changes."

She's received awards from the now defunct Bravewell Collaborative and the Institute for Functional Medicine and is a diplomate of the American Holistic Medical Association. All three of these organizations embrace pseudoscience.

Dr. Guarneri has her own shop, Guarneri Integrative Health at Pacific Pearl La Jolla, which she co-founded and where she serves as Medical Director. At Pacific Pearl, you can see a naturopath or an acupuncturist and buy dietary supplements prescribed by your practitioner. You can get biomat therapy or craniosacral therapy, have a session in an infrared sauna, get an IV infusion of vitamins, or have a facial, among other things.  You can also buy a $4,500 annual "membership" and get to choose whether you prefer an MD-only or MD/ND "team."

Pacific Pearl is offering the "Medical Intuitive" training program in collaboration with The Practical Path, an outfit run by Wendie Colter, who advertises herself as a Medical Intuitive, Clairvoyant, Master Healer and Transformative Coach. What are Colter's qualifications?

"certification in Energy Medicine and graduated the Clairvoyant, Ministerial and Teacher's programs at Clearsight, Santa Monica, a center for intuitive development for over thirty years. She then became a staff instructor of the Energy Medicine and Clairvoyant programs for six years. Wendie received coaching certification from Coach Inc."

Why take this course? (With apologies for the extensive quotes, but summarization couldn't possibly do this language justice. For more on "energy medicine," see here.)

"The Mayo Clinic has determined that up to 44% of medical cases are misdiagnosed every year. Medical Intuition offers a unique skill set for fast, effective health assessments and is a growing area of expertise in the health and wellness fields."

According to Colter, the solution to this crisis in misdiagnosis is to

"[l]earn pinpoint intuitive visual identification skills to locate and evaluate the root causes of body imbalances, illness and disease. Gain powerful energy clearing tools with Biofield Balance Energy Healing™ techniques to help your clients reach their full potential for health and wellness. These skills can be used as stand-alone techniques or as an addition to any integrative, alternative or holistic health care practice."

I was curious to find out who had trademarked "Biofield Balance Energy Healing" but, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, no such trademark is registered. Trademarked or not, Colter herself will conduct a 60-minute Biofield Balance Energy Healing session for $135.

More specifically, the Medical Intuitive student will learn:

"Module 1: Energy Anatomy and Intuitive Assessments
Learn the basics of Medical intuition including visual scanning and evaluation of the biofield and energy anatomy. Biofield Balance Energy Healing™ techniques include clearing energetic blocks, practitioner self-healing methods and energy hygiene. In-class practice and coursework.

"Module 2: Major Energy Centers and Chronic Patterns
Learn to visually identify and evaluate unique energetic structures in the seven major energy centers, or chakras, that impact the body and the biofield, with an emphasis on the aspects of stuck or chronic issues. In-class practice and coursework.

"Module 3: Energetic Structures in the Physical Anatomy
Medical Intuitive scanning of the nine major physical body systems (skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, endocrine, urinary, digestive, reproductive). Learn to identify and evaluate energetic structures and patterns that correspond to illness, imbalance and disease. In-class practice and coursework. Optional textbook: The Anatomy Coloring Book.

"Module 4: Original Trauma Points and Permissions to Heal
Core pattern assessments to identify and evaluate the root causes of traumas at the deepest origination points. Includes permissions and resistance to healing, cellular healing and spiritual ethics. In-class practice and coursework."

Upon completing Level 1, the Medical Intuitive practitioner can take Level 2 classes. After that, it's on to Master classes:

  • Past Lives & Akashic Records
  • Angels, Archetypes & Guides
  • Entities, Aliens & Speaking with the Dead (Pre-req Level 2) and more!

One shudders at the thought of what "and more!" might include.

As we've said before, integrative medicine is just an excuse to integrate quackery into medical practice. And what better example could there be than the "Medical Intuitive" classes offered by an outfit endorsed by the founder of the Scripps Integrative Medicine program? But what do we know? We promoters of science-based medicine are practicing "polarization-based" medicine, "abandoning" patients, and are "big pharma shills," according to the integrative medicine illuminati. Don't listen to us. Go have a chat with the dead.
