Applying Science to Fiction: Hyperspectral Imaging and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy of Moxibustion.

Applying Science to Fiction: Hyperspectral Imaging and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy of Moxibustion.

I think the Chinese have too much time and money on their hands. I keep seeing these articles where modern technology is applied to Traditional Chinese Pseudo-Medicine.

There is computer analysis of tongue diagnosis and fMRI for acupuncture. It is weird, the most high tech of tooth fairy science, and the weirdest example yet is Analysis of the Spectral Characteristics of Pure Moxa Stick Burning by Hyperspectral Imaging and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy.

Yep. The folks at Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences sure know how to waste time and money to

to expand the application of spectral imaging techniques to moxibustion, we observed and analyzed the spectra characteristics (SC) of moxa stick (MS) burning using hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

But why oh why would anyone do this?

Well, people have begun to study the the tooth fairy science of

"moxibustion from the standpoint of biology, chemistry, and physics".

But there are very few reports of the application of tooth fairy spectroscopy in moxibustion.

I wonder why no one has done spectroscopy on moxibustion. Maybe because moxibustion is nonsense?.

But it is by burning that moxibustion has its effects.

So physical characteristics of MS burning is one important research direction to investigate the mechanism of moxibustion.

The problem is of course that moxibustion does nothing. So there is no effect to investigate, much less a reason to use

HSI and FTIR to observe the SC of MS burning at wavelengths of 4001000 nm and 2.515.5 μm.

And why those wavelengths? Not mentioned.

They also examined 10 volunteers that were moxibusted with an

infrared thermogram (IRT) of waist was scanned by VARIOSCAN3021-ST infrared thermal imager (InfraTec Ltd., Germany). The temperature of right BL23 acupoint skin was analyzed by IRBIS 2.2 software. The BP image of waist was scanned by Moor-FLPI laser speckle perfusion (LSP) imager (Moor Instruments Ltd., Axminster, UK). The scanning model was the low density and 25 fps, the time interval was 1 s, exposure time was 20 ms, and 10 frames were continually scanned at each time point. The BP of right BL23 acupoint skin was analyzed by Moor-FLPI software.

And they generated a truck load of high tech, precise and worthless data.

Just so you know

the wavelength of 4001000 nm, the spectrum was distributed at 6001000 nm, and it ascended at 600860 nm, descended at 8601000 nm, and reached its peak at approximately 860 nm. At the wavelength of 2.515.5 μm, the spectrum was mainly distributed at 2.74.2 μm; the peak position was in the range of 3.04.0 μm, and the peak position was approximately 3.5 μm. The results indicate that the radiation spectra of MS include red, near infrared, and far infrared wavelengths, among which the near and far infrared wavelengths are the main components.

And they hypothesize that this red and near infrared radiation has wide ranging biologic effects

A large portion of red light has been absorbed by mitochondria. Consequently, the activity of mitochondria peroxidase has been enhanced, thereby increasing cellular metabolism, promoting the synthesis of proteins and energy metabolism, and causing changes to cellular functions [23]. Additionally, red light can enhance the phagocytosis of leukocytes and transformation of lymphocytes, thereby improving the immune functions of organisms [24]; it can also decrease platelet adhesion, plasma viscosity, and hematocrit, thus promoting tissue repair and accelerating healing.

its absorption by the water in the cells and blood causes the vibration of O-H and H-O-H bonds in water, thereby converting the infrared light thermal energy to kinetic energy of irregular motions of water molecules and increasing the water temperature.

Moxibustion causes a change in vibrational energy change in water! Who knew.

My summary of this wordy sciency study?

If you burn a weed it gets hot and if you hold the burning weed over the skin, the skin gets warmer.

An Ignoble candidate?  Their motto is "achievements that make people LAUGH, and then THINK."  Well, 1 our of 2 ain't bad.

The rest is all hypothetical hand waving to justify effects for moxibustion that simply do not exist.

That is what passes for science in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Tooth fairy science at its best? Or lip stick on a pig science?
